Mid Century Cactus Party

The thing I like best about event styling is taking something
and using it in a unique and different way from its intended purpose. For this party,
I challenged myself to find items that I could re-purpose. I hope this
gives you the inspiration to trysomething new the next time you have an event!

With fall right around the corner I wanted to squeeze in one last summer party, and since we still have 80 degree weather in Washington, fall still feels like a distant thought. I opted for the popular cactus theme with a slight twist, I wanted to evoke the feeling of mid-century Palm Springs.

My first thought was to have an awesome vintage starburst metal wall art for my backdrop. It really wasn't in the budget for this event, so I opted to make one! I bought a pack of paint stir sticks, spray painted them gold metallic and then hot glued them together in a pattern I liked. I then added an old glass drawer knob to the top. This was a fun re-purpose of paint stir sticks!

In my opinion the most important part of any dessert table is the backdrop. It sets the stage for your theme and all the yummy treats on your table. I went searching for something creative to use as a modern backdrop and came across this fabulous removable wallpaper by Repeel. I love that it has flecks of wood grain in the pattern and a metallic shimmery chevron/herringbone design.

Over the years I have done several dessert tables, this time I wanted something different (after all that seems to be the theme for this party). This time I decided on brunch. I kept everything very simple, but still scrumptious!

I offered my guests old fashioned cake donuts, fresh fruit, orange-cranberry scones and banana nut muffins. The best about this menu was the ease of food prep, the grocery store did all the hard work for me.

For drinks we had mango lemonade and vodka on the side for anyone wanting a spiked version. If you haven't tried these yummy lemonades from Hubert's, you definitely should, they are delicious!

One of my favorite finds for this party was this vintage inspired radio box. How cute is this? I couldn't resist, it fit the theme so perfectly, so in my cart it went!

If you really want to make your food stand out and look more impressive, try adding lots of varying heights to the table. You can use boxes, cake plates, jars or buckets. In this case I found a cute modern looking metal garbage in peach, turn upside down and now I have a cute stand.
